If the cause of death is expected due to a lingering illness, you need to contact the GP or the attending doctor/physician to issue a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, which is "a legal document which records the full details of the deceased, the circumstances of and cause of death." This document is needed before embalming, burial, or cremation can take place and must be given to the funeral director. You can read more about it here.

If the cause of death is unexpected (such as in an accident) or unknown (such as suspected foul play), you need to contact the police who will get a medical practitioner to verify death. They will also assess whether the death needs to be reported to the Coroner.
